Fifty-six top USA Swimming athletes from the eastern zone invited to camp

Charlottesville, VA –  Local South Shore YMCA Strypers’ swimmer, Nicholas (Nick) Toepfer has been chosen as one of 56 swimmers (28 female and 28 male) for the USA Swimming’s Eastern Zone Select Camp set at the University of Virginia in Charlottesville June 6-9, 2018.

“We are extremely proud to have Nick representing the South Shore YMCA Strypers at the Eastern Zone Select Camp,” said Bernie Dickman, Director of Competitive Swimming and Nick’s coach. “This honor reflects the hard work he’s put into his training and is another step toward his goal of swimming at the 2020 Olympic Trials.”  Dickman has also been selected as a coach for the USA Eastern Zone Select Camp.  “It is exciting to be able to participate in the camp.  It is a great opportunity to see, work with and learn from some of the fastest swimmers in our region as well as some great coaches.  It is truly exciting that one of those athletes is ours!”

During the four-day camp, Toepfer will participate in five long course workouts and had the opportunity to learn from professionals about post-race recovery, psychological training skills, nutrition and race strategy.

The Selection Process:  Toepfer is one of the 28 top male USA Swimming athletes in the Eastern Zone selected for the camp. Swimmers are selected from the SWIMS database of top times during the 2017 qualifying period, where the fastest athlete in each event, ranging from age 12 to 13 for girls and 13 to 14 for boys are invited to the camp. Nick posted the fastest times in the Eastern Zone in the 100m and 200m Backstroke with New England record setting times.  There are three zones in the US for USA swimming.
