Burgess & Hayward

Summer Programs

Surf in California, sail on Nantucket Sound, hike in the beautiful mountains of the Northeast, fine tune leadership skills in Northern Ireland, or earn some service hours on Cape Cod.  Building on more than 20 years of leading trips for teens around North America, we now offer trips and programs focusing on Adventure, Community Service and Leadership Development.

Programs last for either one or two weeks, but it is easy to link trips together to create a longer experience.  How about a week of Community Service followed by surfing on the National Seashore?  Our Base Camp is located within Camp Burgess & Hayward, allowing some of our programs to join with camp activities and utilize camp facilities.  What about doing a two week session at Camp followed by a week of biking on Nantucket?  Many older campers seeking new challenges will find what they are looking for with one of our programs.  Our mature, experienced and highly trained staff lead with a focus on safety.  We provide the safe environment where teens can relax, be themselves and make new friends.

Join us for a life changing summer!

Base Camp

ssymca-summer programsBase Camp is located next to Camp Burgess, in Sandwich, Cape Cod, surrounded by ponds and woods.  Most programs spend at least the first and last night at the Base Camp, some spend all, depending on the trip schedule.  We have large platform tents with cots and mattresses, a large, covered outdoor eating area, and a bathroom and shower house.  There arehammocks for lazing and a yurt for lounging.  The yurt is a circular building with a domed roof which we use as our lounge ‐ a space to eat when it rains, play cards, or watch a movie when we're tired.  All programs are co‐ed, although sleeping arrangements are separate.  All programs except the Northern Ireland trip are open to 1217 year olds.  We cannot guarantee either a 50/50 male/female split or the ages of other participants.  We normally have a good mix but we will call you if we feel there is an extreme imbalance.

The majority of the food menu is decided as a group, except for the California and Northern Ireland Trips, where most meals are catered by our hosts.  Participants will take turns to shop for ingredients, prepare and cook meals.  This is a fun and enriching part of the experience.  Base Camp has a small herb garden and raised beds of lettuce.  We are also located close to the new farm at Camp Burgess. We encourage varied and healthy eating.
