American Red Cross Certification Courses held at the South Shore YMCA are the best place to start! Whether it be learning to be a lifeguard or learning to respond to an emergency by becoming certified in CPR, the skills learned in these courses could save a life.
All American Red Cross Classes require a 50% non-refundable deposit. It is advised that you ensure you can meet the prerequisite prior to paying for the class.

NEW American Red Cross Babysitters Class
Jump start your first business venture by enrolling in the American Red Cross Babysitting course and get the training you need. Learn how to care for infants through school age children and perform tasks such as diapering, preparing simple meals, and dressing. In addition, the course will offer ideas for toys and games to play with the children. You will learn how to handle emergencies and focus on safe care of infants and children. Taking the Babysitters Course will look appealing to future customers. Appropriate for ages 11-15.
Lifeguarding puts you in an exciting position, working as part of a team to help people safely enjoy the water. You could save a life too! Lifeguarding will help you develop skilld and experience that will be valued by colleges and future employers. 25 hour course includes first aid and CPR. Certification will be valid for 2 years. Must be 15 by the conclusion of the class. Prerequisites include 300 yard swim using freestyle and breaststroke, 20 yard swim retrieving a 10lb weight returning with the brick, timed treading water without using hands.

Lifeguard Waterfront Module
Add this to your basic lifeguard certification to be able to guard at waterfront such as beaches and lakes. 5 hour course. Certification will be valid for 2 years. Must hold a current Lifeguard Certification. Prerequisites include: 500 yard swim using freestyle and breaststroke, 20 yard swim retrieving a 10lb weight returning with the brick, timed treading water without using hands, and a 10 yard underwater swim.

Lifeguard Recertification Course
This course will recertify your lifeguard and CPR certification. You must bring a pocket mask with you to class. Students should review material prior to the start of class. Prerequisites include: 300 yard swim using freestyle and breaststroke, 20 yard swim retrieving a 10lb weight returning with the brick, timed treading water without using hands.

Water Safety Instructor Course
If you're at least 16 years old and a proficient swimmer, you can become an American Red Cross Water Safety instructor. Learn to teach children and adults to swim, and give water safety presentations to kids and their parents. It's a fun and meaningful job that's in high demand. Plus, Red Cross certification is recognized nationwide so you can work anywhere in the United States. Prerequisite 25 proficient swim of each of the following strokes; freestyle, backstroke, breast stroke, side stroke & elementary backstroke, and a 15 yard swim of butterfly.

CPR for the Professional Rescuer
Designed for individuals with a duty to respond to emergencies, this program combines discussions, video and hands-on training. Real-life rescue scenarios reinforce decision-making skills. Free quarterly refreshers. Course covers how to respond to breathing and cardiac emergencies in adults, children and infants until more advanced medical personnel take over. 2 year certification.
