Make a Splash

Ages 3 months - 3 years

  • The Parent/child programs include the basics of water safety and swimming skills
  • No swim evaluation is required for these classes
  • All children must wear swim diapers

Water Babies: 6-18 months with parent
Parent/Tot: 24-18 months with parent

Ages 3 - 5 years

Pre-Pike: 3-5 years is designed for children & parents who would like to take a Pike class together

  • Preschool swimming is for children not yet in first grade

Pike: 3-5 years old, will help children understand basic aquatic safety and learn to be comfortable in the water. Children will be supported by the instructor then gradually learn to swim short distances independently.
Eel: 3-5 years old, will help children build confidence swimming independently and learn the basics of front crawl and back crawl.
Ray: 3-5 years old, will build upon the strokes learned in eel with an emphasis on rotary breathing and an introduction to breast stroke, elementary back stroke, and the kneeling dive.
Starfish: 3-5 years old, builds on the introductory strokes learned in previous levels and working on stroke refinement and working their way up to 25 yards. Children will also be introduced to surface dives and standing dives.

  • Each skill level is divided into five components: Personal safety, stroke development, water sports and games, personal growth, and rescue

Polliwog : 6-12 years old, will focus on helping children understand the basic aquatic safety and gain confidence in the water. Children learn to swim independently.
Guppy: 6-12 years old, this class will introduce front crawl and back crawl and help children gain confidence in the water. Children learn to swim independently. 
Minnow: 6-12 years old, builds on front crawl with an emphasis on rotary breathing and back crawl while adding an introduction to elementary backstroke and breast stroke. Kids will also be introduced to standing dive and basic diving safety.
Fish: 6-12 years old, will be working on stroke refinement, building endurance, and an introduction to butterfly and sidestroke.
Flying Fish: 6-12 years old, will work on perfecting stroke technique while building endurance. They will be swimming in 50-100 yard increments, and perfecting flip turns and starts from the block.
Shark: 6-12 years old, works on swimming longer distances and building endurance, they will be swimming in 100-200 yard increments. There is an introduction to competitive swimming including IMs, understanding the pace clock, relays etc.
Flyers: 6-12 years old, is an introduction to swim team, where they will learn the basic rules of competitive swimming, and partake in a workout style lesson.

Private Swim Lessons

  • For pre-school, youth and adults
  • Choice of one-on-one or semi-private with up to three students

Red Cross Certifications

A 30-hour nationally recognized certification program for those who wish to become lifeguards. Successful completion of this course provides Lifeguard, Community First Aid, & CPR for the Professional Rescuer Certifications.

Stryper Swim Team

The South Shore YMCA Stryper Swim Team is comprised of locally, regionally and nationally ranked competitors in YMCA and USA Swimming. Ages of team members range from 6 to 18.

The Strypers team is based on the belief that we can improve the quality of our athletes' lives by promoting healthy spirit, mind and body. Through quality training, technical know-how and positive input, we work to make the athlete not only a greatswimmer, but an outstanding individual. Our program is based out of the Mill Pond Branch, with practices offered at both the Quincy and Mill Pond Branches. We offer developmental and highly-competitive training to all surrounding communities in Southeastern Massachusetts.
