A Milestone Moment: Final Beam Raised at
Hale Family YMCA Expansion

On Thursday, July 17, the South Shore YMCA marked a major milestone in the expansion of its Hale Family YMCA in Quincy with a traditional Topping Off Ceremony, celebrating the placement of the final steel beam atop the structure.

The ceremony represented more than construction progress—it honored the strength of community partnerships and the promise of expanded opportunity. Once complete, the 20,000-square-foot addition will become a vibrant hub for youth and teen programs, a new gymnastics training center, and expanded group fitness and medical wellness offerings.

Trevor Williams, President of the South Shore YMCA, opened the event by welcoming guests and expressing gratitude to those who have helped bring the expansion to life. Jay Dacey, CEO of Integrated Builders, recognized the project team and city partners. “We always love working for the Y,” said Dacey. “They’re a great group to work with, and we appreciate the efforts of DJSA Architecture, Quieto Consulting Engineers, Kelly Engineering, and the City of Quincy for helping move this project forward.”

Dennis Swart, President of DJSA Architecture, reflected on the firm’s connection to YMCA work. “Our team has been working with YMCAs for over 20 years, and it’s been an honor to support the South Shore Y on a project that will have such a meaningful impact.”

Paul Gorman, CEO of the South Shore YMCA, spoke to the long-term vision of the project. “This has been a long time in the planning. It’s exciting to see the building rising—a symbol of what’s to come for the youth and families of Quincy. This will be a space for belonging, growth, and support.”

Also in attendance were Rob Stevens from the Quincy Planning Department, Principal Keith Ford of Quincy High School, and members of the South Shore YMCA Executive Board and staff.

Students from the South Shore YMCA’s State Street Early Learning Center and campers from Camp Quirk also joined the celebration, signing their names on the final beam before it was lifted into place.

Their involvement was a meaningful reminder that this expansion is being built for the next generation who will grow, learn, and thrive in the space for years to come.

Katelyn Szafir, South Shore YMCA Vice President of Hale Operations, emphasized the broader impact of the expansion. “With the last beam placed at the highest point, we are one step closer to making a lasting, positive impact on our community through youth and teen empowerment programs, gymnastics, and group fitness initiatives—creating more opportunities for our members and neighbors.”

This expansion is made possible through the South Shore YMCA’s Leave Your Mark Capital Campaign, which continues to accept contributions and naming gifts from individuals and businesses looking to invest in the future of our community.
