This week, participants from our Emilson YMCA’s Aqua Fitness program, led by their dedicated instructor Annie Donovan, gathered for their third annual Holiday Cheer Luncheon. This festive event has become a cherished tradition, bringing together a group of individuals who have built a strong community both in and out of the water.
Aqua Fit with Annie, a class held three times a week, has become a source of connection and vitality for all its participants. Many attend every class, not just for the health benefits but for the camaraderie and support this group provides. One participant shared how Annie’s classes have given her purpose and joy, helping her build friendships and stay active. “I live alone, and coming to class each week has helped me make new friends and improve my health. Annie’s classes and this group are truly the highlights of my week,” she said.
Annie kicked off the celebration by expressing her gratitude for the generosity of the participants. “There’s always a good vibe here at our Y. This group is so giving and caring, always showing up with piles of donations. Everyone brings positive energy and gives it to those around them, whether they’re here or out in the community. I’m so thankful for you all.”
This luncheon was not only a time to celebrate the friendships and bonds formed throughout the year but also an opportunity for the group to give back. Guests contributed non-perishable food items for the South Shore YMCA’s Food Pantry and raised funds for the Y’s Hope for the Holidays program, which provides gifts to families in need during the holiday season. Their generosity exemplifies the Y’s mission of strengthening community and supporting those in need.
Annie is a two-time cancer survivor, and her Aqua Fit crew rallied around her as she underwent treatment, regained her strength, and returned to the Y, offering love and support as they have whenever others in their group are facing challenges.
Annie’s daughter Grace joined the gathering and shared heartfelt words about how the Y community has touched her family’s life. “I just want to thank you guys for being such an amazing community for my mom. She’s the hardest working woman I know and it’s really nice that over the years she’s found you guys, it brings her so much joy. Thank you all for being so lovely to my mom.”
Annie and her Aqua Fitness participants have created a space where everyone feels supported and valued. If someone misses a class, the group checks in to make sure they’re okay. When someone needs help, they’re ready to lend a hand. As the group celebrated another year of friendship, fitness, and community, they also demonstrated the heart of the Y: bringing people together to make a difference. We are proud to honor their efforts and look forward to seeing this tradition of giving and togetherness continue to thrive.
