Dear South Shore YMCA Members & Friends,
We are thrilled to share a historic moment for our Y and our community. As we work to complete the 20,000-square-foot expansion of the Hale Family YMCA in Quincy, a project designed to bring new opportunities for health, wellness, and connection, we are proud to announce that this new wing will be named The Paul Gorman Center for Community Impact in honor of our retiring CEO, Paul Gorman.

Paul has dedicated over 30 years of service to the YMCA, including 16 years leading the South Shore YMCA through extraordinary growth and transformation. Under his leadership, we have doubled membership, expanded early learning programs, built new facilities, and strengthened our commitment to serving families and individuals across the South Shore.
This new center will feature:
- A State-of-the-Art Gymnastics Training Center – Bringing youth gymnastics to Quincy for the first time.
- Studio D Health & Wellness Space – A large-scale studio for group exercise and wellness programs.
- The Phyllis Godwin Empowerment Center – A dedicated space for girls and women to connect, learn, and thrive.
Naming this expansion after Paul reflects his unwavering dedication to creating spaces that foster community, inclusion, and opportunity for all. His legacy will live on in every program, every class, and every life touched within these walls.

We invite you to join us in celebrating the opening of this transformational space. Stay tuned for details on our Grand Opening Celebration in winter 2026.

A Milestone Moment: Final Beam Raised at Hale Family YMCA Expansion
On Thursday, July 17, the South Shore YMCA marked a major milestone in the expansion of its Hale Family YMCA in Quincy with a traditional Topping Off Ceremony, celebrating the placement of the final steel beam atop the structure.
The ceremony represented more than construction progress—it honored the strength of community partnerships and the promise of expanded opportunity. Once complete, the 20,000-square-foot addition will become a vibrant hub for youth and teen programs, a new gymnastics training center, and expanded group fitness and medical wellness offerings.

The South Shore YMCA has officially broken ground on the Hale Family Y expansion in Quincy this week. This ambitious project will add 20,000 square feet to the existing facility, including a state-of-the-art gymnastics center, dedicated teen programming space, and large-scale studio for health and wellness and adaptive programming. A huge thank you to Rob and Karen Hale for their incredible generosity and support, and to Mayor Thomas Koch for his unwavering commitment to our community, and to the entire team at Integrated Builders. This expansion is part of the ongoing Leave Your Mark capital campaign, which has already raised over $12 million for transformational projects across the South Shore. The new facilities will provide incredible opportunities for youth, teens, and active seniors to engage in positive, empowering activities. We look forward to welcoming the community to these new spaces in early 2026! 🎉

To our Hale Family Y Members & Friends,
Happy New Year! We are excited to announce that our much-anticipated Hale Family YMCA expansion project will begin on Monday, January 6. The 20,000 expansion will add an almost 9,000 square-foot, state-of-the-art Gymnastics Center and our largest group exercise studio, which will be nearly 3,500 square feet. The project is expected to be completed in the winter of 2026.
As the project begins next week, here are a few things you’ll need to know for January. Our goal is to minimize disruptions to your Y experience throughout the entire project.
- Starting January 6, 2025, a small portion of our side parking lot will be unavailable for parking.
- To accommodate construction vehicles and materials, our playground driveway will not be accessible to members, including State Street Early Learning Center families.
We will keep you updated with project progress via email and on our website. If you have any questions or concerns, please reach out to me at kszafir@ssymca.org.
Thank you,
Katelyn Szafir
