South Shore residents are invited to Laura’s Center for the Arts as the cast of local South Shore children will soon present Xanadu Jr. The Musical. The show premieres on Friday, March 15 running through Sunday, March 17 with three performances scheduled on Friday and Saturday night at 7pm, a Sunday matinee at 2pm.

“The thing I really love about this show is that while it’s completely dated, it’s also got such a timeless quality at heart,” said Tyler Cavanagh, Assistant Director, Arts and Education, The SSYMCA’s Laura’s Center for the Arts. “The parents of our actors may have been more excited when we announced the show, but I think our teens are really connecting with the complexity of the characters.”

Xanadu Jr. The Musical follows the journey of a magical and beautiful Greek muse, Clio – also known as Kira – who descends from the heavens of Mount Olympus to Venice Beach, California on a mission to inspire a struggling artist named Sonny, in achieving the greatest artistic creation of the time – the first Roller Disco! Things take a turn when Kira falls into forbidden love with the mortal Sonny; her jealous sisters take advantage of the situation and chaos begins.

This show features classic hits such as “Evil Woman”, “All Over the World”, “Strange Magic” and more!

Opportunities are still available for children to get involved in the play, as well. Students interested in working with the LCA production team as a part of stage management, crew, costume design, set design, lighting, etc. are encouraged to contact Tyler Cavanagh, at tcavanagh@ssymca.org or 781-829-8585 ext. 8336.

Xanadu Jr. The Musical is presented through special arrangement with Music Theatre International (MTI). All authorized performance materials are also supplied by MTI.

“The students are taking these roles, which come as incredibly black and white, and have been working really hard to bring a sense of humanity to them, which is one of the reasons we do theatre – to really learn who we are as people,” explained Cavanagh. “I think audiences are going to find a lot of funny references and hear a lot of music that they may not have listened to in while, but it will be a walk down memory lane for some, and a chance to build new memories for others!”

Xanadu Jr. The Musical will take place on March 15, 16, and 17 at Laura’s Center for the Arts at 96 Mill Street, Hanover MA, 02339. Friday and Saturday night’s performances will begin at 7pm with a Sunday matinee at 2pm. Tickets are on sale now! $10 for adults and $5 for children. To purchase tickets, visit www.ssymca.org.
