South Shore YMCA and Alma Cares Serve Thanksgiving Meals to Neighbors in Need

Posted: Nov. 24, 2020 Holiday Assistance

QUINCY & HANOVER, NOVEMBER 24, 2020 – Each year, the South Shore YMCA kicks off its Holiday Assistance Program by partnering with Chef Paul Wahlberg and his Alma Cares organization to package and distribute over 1700 donated Thanksgiving meals to help local seniors, individuals and families facing food insecurity.

With higher unemployment due to the pandemic, more people find themselves in need of food assistance, especially during the holiday season and colder months ahead. According to Massachusetts Governor, Charlie Baker, “This crisis has made things more difficult for families that were food insecure and has obviously increased the need.”

This year, COVID-19 also brought about a new set of challenges for the Y’s annual Thanksgiving meal program, with physical distancing protocols limiting the number of people who could gather together safely to pack meals, higher food costs and the tightening of food supply chains.

The South Shore YMCA Germantown Neighborhood Center Food Pantry has seen nearly quadruple its weekly usage since the pandemic began. Support from donors and the community are critical to ensure that the Y can continue in its mission to ensure that nobody in our community goes hungry during this crisis.

“We want to thank Alma Cares, Paul Wahlberg and the Wahlberg family, and all the staff and volunteers here at the YMCA for all their hard work in this effort,” said South Shore YMCA President and CEO, Paul Gorman.

“This assistance is greatly needed this time of year, but especially this year, and we want to thank everyone who has participated,” added Gorman. “We could not continue to fully serve the community each week at our food pantry without the community’s help, so we ask you to please remember our Y when you consider your year-end giving.”
