South Shore YMCA Celebrates Diversity at 2018 August Moon Festival

Posted: Aug. 10, 2018

QUINCY, MA – The Quincy August Moon Festival, which was awarded Best of Boston 2018 (“Best Street Festival”) by Boston Magazine, took place across Coddington Street in Quincy Center yesterday. This year marked the 31st anniversary of the festival in Quincy, which is one of the largest August Moon Festivals in the Northeast.

At the festival, families were able to visit the expanded Kids Zone with a free petting zoo, free pony rides, a dunk tank hosted by the SSYMA Stryper Competitive Swim Team, the South Shore YMCA family stage, and cultural crafts and activities.

“We’re proud to continue our partnership with QARI on important community events like the annual August Moon Festival,” said Chrissy Shah, Executive Director of the South Shore YMCA in Quincy. “By hosting an area for families and children to interact and explore at this year’s celebration, August Moon was a perfect opportunity to support our partners at QARI, the City of Quincy, and to celebrate the diversity of our City and surrounding communities”

The event attracted thousands of people to celebrate and enjoy both traditional and contemporary performances, amusements for all ages, and a taste of Asia with street fare from food trucks and local restaurants.

“August Moon started off on a much smaller scale for immigrants to connect back to their culture and feel a sense of belonging to the city of Quincy,” said Philip Chong, CEO, Quincy Asian Resources, Inc. “Year over year, we attract more attendees and are because of this, we’re becoming recognized as a destination city for outsiders to visit and experience all we have to offer. After 31 years, our August Moon celebration’s exponential growth shows that the city and its partners like the South Shore YMCA truly value diversity and all different types of people and cultures. This support speaks volumes and communicates a strong message that they care about differences and embrace diversity.”
