The South Shore Y’s 2019 Thingamajig® Invention Convention took place yesterday, August 8, 2019. The event allowed children to participate in hands-on exhibits, challenges and workshops. The entire event, from the preliminary challenges to the final team project, was designed to help fight summer learning loss. Approximately 350 children from across the South Shore participated in this year’s convention, held at the South Shore YMCA’s Quincy Branch.

No matter where children live, the Y strives to ensure that all children have access to quality learning environments and STEM education, hence why The South Shore YMCA’s THINGAMAJIG® Invention Convention is offered annually to help foster an interest in STEM in children both across the South Shore, and across the US. Thingamajig helps kids gear up for a triumphant and confident return to school in the fall.

At yesterday’s event, all children ages 5-14 were invited to participate, whether enrolled in South Shore YMCA summer camps or not. There, the kids were asked to tackle an on-the-spot team design challenge using only what they have on hand, and in mind.

The event is supported in part by South Shore Playhouse Associates and grants from Braintree, Holbrook, and Weymouth Cultural Councils.
