On Wednesday, July 11, there was a break in the heatwave, paving the way for a breezy game on the green to support a good cause! Golf aficionados from across the South Shore took advantage of the beautiful weather and converged upon the Pinehills Golf Club in Plymouth for the South Shore YMCA’s 2018 Golf Classic.

The 22nd annual event raised over $174,000 to benefit several of the SSYMCA’s community-enriching Medical Wellness and Partnership Programs, thanks to the generous support of over 220 participants, sponsors, and donors in attendance including many of you!

From fall prevention to cancer support to diabetes management, the SSYMCA’s Medical Wellness Programs offer a wide-range of workshops, support and specialized exercise to promote healthy living, foster fellowship among peers, and to provide potentially life-altering education and instruction to participants facing certain disabilities and illnesses. In addition, the South Shore YMCA’s Partnership Program ensures that individuals with disabilities can exercise and participate in other physical activities they enjoy, whether in the gym, in the pool, or, in this case, on the golf course.

Throughout the day, players learned of the profound impact that the South Shore YMCA’s Medical Wellness and Partnership Programs have had on participants like Leland (Lee) Dingee.

In 2015, Dingee’s life changed forever following his diagnosis and treatment of advanced prostate cancer. After joining the LIVESTRONG at the YMCA program, it went far beyond a place to simply rebuild his strength, becoming a place for Dingee to reclaim his confidence, too.

“I joined the LIVESTRONG at the YMCA program at the Quincy Y with a group of other men and women,” said Dingee. “There, I found that interaction with other cancer patients was very beneficial in understanding how to cope. We worked to support each other through exercise programs to build strength and confidence. It fosters an ongoing sense of community for us, and that really helps us all.”

Other program participants including Carole Ross, Kathy Crowley and Alan Ritsko were also on-site to share their stories of success. And, while their stories are all different, each attributes a part of their recovery to exercise and group activities found through Medical Wellness Programs at the South Shore YMCA – programs that would simply not be possible without donations.

The Y is a charity that provides financial assistance and support for programs like those mentioned above. Since membership dues only cover the cost of its facilities, the Y depends on the generosity of donors, such as those participating in this year’s Golf Tournament, to support life-changing programs that make a lasting impact.

Special thanks to the top sponsors of this year’s tournament, including Campanelli, Integrated Builders, Feeney Brothers, Neighborhood Health Plan, Eastern Bank, Technogym and Acella Construction.
