The SSYMCA 9.0 40+ Mixed Doubles Team will be competing in Orlando, FL. Nov. 15-17. Led by Captain and long-time member, Laurie Dannison, the team of 15 players competed last fall in a competitive season against the Lakeville, MA team.  They competed in Sectionals in July against two teams from the North Shore (MA), the Sparks Fitness and Tennis from Haverhill, and The Rally Point Club in Rhode Island.

“We are all grateful to be playing at this level and truly enjoy the sport,” said Dannison. “My teammates could all win the sportsmanship awards for being kind and composed on the court. Each player has worked hard to get us to Nationals and we are all looking forward to representing New England in Orlando.”

The players heading to Orlando in November as part of the SSYMCA 9.0 40+ Mixed Doubles Team include: Chris Prudente, Chris Knight, Keith Linehart, Marcos Jardim, Noel Fernandez, Carolyn Mahoney, Anastasia Rozanitis and Laurie Dannison.  Other teammates on the team are Davida Dinerman, Sandra Ponichtera, Lauri Hanrahan, Elizabeth O’Keefe, Robert Johnson, Richard Shea, Jim Kelly, and Victor Luzarraga.

Congratulations are in order for the SSYMCA 2.5 Women’s Tennis Team on qualifying for Nationals as well!

This team of all first-time USTA League players was led by Captain Julie Smith. In her first role as captain, she says her team fought hard through tough matches to win.

“We are all still in shock and we are so proud that we have made it this far,” said Smith.

In the two-team flight, Smith played both singles and doubles, winning both matches. She won her singles match in straight sets. In doubles with partner Beth Chadwick, the match was decided by a nail-biting tie-breaker.

“One of the most memorable moments for me was when my partner and I were down 3-9 in third-set tiebreak and we fought back each point until we won 13-11,” said Smith.

Teammates Jerilyn Tyrell and Shawna DiBona also won in a third-set tiebreak in the second doubles position. The team won the flight 2-0 to advance to Nationals in October in Las Vegas, NV.

Team members who are heading to nationals the weekend of October 3 as part of the SSYMCA 2.5 Women’s Tennis Team include: Julie Smith, Julie Robinson, Julie Smith, Beth Chadwick, Jerilyn Tyrrell, Ruth Mcgee, Shawna DiBona, Cathy Delorie, Valerie Holland, Mary Beth McGee, Jerusha Shatzkamer.
