Emilson Sprinkler Project Begins August 1
Dear Emilson YMCA Members & Friends,
We are writing to share an important update about a required safety project that will temporarily impact the Emilson YMCA indoor pool area this summer.
Beginning August 1, the Emilson YMCA must install a new fire protection sprinkler system across the ceiling of our two indoor pools. This required project will temporarily close the indoor pool area while the work is completed.
Why We’re Doing This
To comply with current safety standards and insurance requirements, this sprinkler system installation is required to help ensure the safety of our members, guests, staff, and community. In order to complete the installation safely, both indoor pools must be closed and drained so that scaffolding can be built and the sprinkler system can be installed.
Project Timeline
The project will officially begin on Saturday, August 1. We expect the work to take approximately six weeks, with the pool area scheduled to reopen on or around Monday, September 14, 2026, pending chemical balancing and appropriate water temperature.
What to Expect During the Closure
During this closure, members will not have access to the indoor pool area, including the family pool, lap pool, sauna, whirlpool, and steam room.
- Lap swimmers may use the designated Camp Pool at the Dacey Family Outdoor Aquatic Center on weekdays from 6:00–9:00 AM and weekends from 7:00–10:00 AM.
- Select aqua fitness classes will continue to be offered at the Outdoor Aquatic Center during this time. For current class schedules and locations, visit ssymca.org/schedules or browse schedules in the South Shore YMCA mobile app.
While the pools are already offline, we will complete our annual end-of-summer pool maintenance, including deep cleaning the pools and pool deck, refreshing paint throughout the area, and replacing the lap pool heater. Before reopening, the pools will be refilled, chemically balanced, and brought back to the appropriate water temperature.
South Shore YMCA members who would like to swim during the closure may also use the Hale Family YMCA or other YMCA locations through Y reciprocity.
Thank you for your flexibility
We recognize that this is a significant disruption and inconvenience, especially for our swimming members and families who rely on the pools as part of their regular Y experience. Please know that we do not take the impact of this mandatory project lightly. Your safety is our top priority, and we are committed to communicating clearly, minimizing disruption where possible, and reopening the pool area as soon as it is safe to do so.
Thank you for your patience, understanding, and flexibility as we complete this important safety project. We are grateful for your membership and your continued support of the Emilson YMCA. If you have any questions, please stop by our Welcome Desk.
