Active Older Adult Classes & Programs

The following are just some of the Active Older Adult Health & Fitness classes that are available as part of South Shore YMCA membership. A Matter of Balance

Falling can be preventable! This free 8-week program is based on Fear of Falling: A Matter of Balance. This program emphasizes practical strategies to manage falls. You will learn to: view falls as controllable, set goals for increasing activity, make changes to reduce fall risks at home, exercise to increase strength and balance. Ages 65+ or anyone with a fear of falling. FREE 8-week program for members and non-members.

Tai Chi

Noncompetitive, self-paced program of gentle exercise, stretching and deep breathing. The class meets two times per week, with 50 cumulative hours recommended. Available for ages 18+. “A Matter of Balance” may enjoy up to 50 hours FREE. Included with SSYMCA Membership.

Fall Prevention

The focus of this class is on strength training and balance. Based on Dr. Wayne Wescott’s research to achieve strength gains and better balance. He is the leader in his field in regards to research on the benefits of strength training. Enjoy the expertise and motivation of the staff as they lead you through an individualized program. Quincy Branch only. Included with SSYMCA Membership.

Walk with Ease

An exercise program to help individuals with Arthritis or other related conditions reduce pain, improve balance, strength and walking pace, while improving overall health. Meets three times per week. FREE for members and non-members.

Tai Chi

Tai Chi is a holistic mind/body fitness system. It helps to revitalize the body, lower blood pressure, loosen the various body parts and relax the mind, thus eliminating stress. It is a superb exercise for cultivating and maintaining general health. It is also highly effective for cardiovascular, central nervous and digestive systems.

Live Y’Ers: Active Adults Rock!

Live Y’ers is a dynamic group of active and involved men and women ages 55 and above who engage in learning, social, volunteer and recreational experiences together through the South Shore YMCA. New events are happening each month, including luncheons, walking clubs, exercise groups and health-related lectures.
