Low-Impact Program with High-Impact Results for Individuals with Arthritis

Did you know that arthritis impacts more than 50 million Americans, making it the number one cause of disability in the country? The South Shore YMCA is here to help, with an evidence-based group exercise program called Enhance Fitness, designed for those with arthritis. This program features simple, easy-to-learn movements that motivate individuals (particularly those with arthritis) to stay active and reclaim their health.

Some changes that past participants have noticed include:

  • More energy
  • Better balance
  • Increases in upper and lower body strength
  • More flexibility and range of motion
  • Better sleep
  • More feelings of happiness
  • Sense of independence

“We’re excited to invite older adults of all abilities to join us for our Enhance Fitness program,” said Stephanie Costa, Director of Health and Wellbeing at the South Shore YMCA Emilson branch, “Not only will you improve your physical health and build social relationships with fellow participants, but you’ll also have a great time under Mary’s guidance. Come join the fun!”

In addition to the physical benefits, research has shown that among older adults who participate in Enhance Fitness, health costs were lowered each year by close to $1,000.

“This class changed my life,” said Sue, Hale Family YMCA member and longtime Enhance Fitness attendee. “This class is the perfect blend of strength and stretching, I’ve noticed a high difference since starting. And I’ve made so many friends in class, I look forward to seeing them every week.”

Each class session includes cardiovascular, strength training, balance and flexibility exercises and the fostering of strong social relationships between participants. Enhance Fitness is geared toward older adults. Those with a chronic condition, such as arthritis, need not worry; they will never have to do anything that hurts. Participants can use chairs for support, if necessary, and increase the weight they use for strength training at their own pace.

The South Shore YMCA offers Enhance Fitness classes at the Emilson Y branch in Hanover (Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays), and the Hale Family Y branch in Quincy (Mondays Wednesdays, and Fridays). For more information, please visit ssymca.org/programs.
